Ibrahim Musa Becomes First Nigerian To Bag ASH Research Global Award

The American Society of Hematology, ASH, has conferred the 2021, ASH Research Global Award on a researcher, Dr. Ibrahim Musa, of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH, making him the first Nigerian to receive the prestigious honour.

Announcing the award in a statement on Friday, Professor of Community Medicine, AKTH, Awwalu Gajida said Mr Musa won the award for his research on “A Randomised Controlled Double Blind Trial for Prevention of Recurrent Ischaemic Priapism in Men with Sickle Cell Anemia, A Pilot study”.

Mr Gajida disclosed that Mr Musa would also receive research support for his project in hematology, adding that he is one of the nine talented early-career investigators selected for the honor.

According to him, the nine researchers selected for this year’s award represent ten countries including Switzerland, United Kingdom, Brazil, Nigeria, India and Italy, among others.

“He is the first Nigerian to be selected for the ASH Global Research Award. In 2019/2020 he was also one of the first two Nigerians to be awarded with a year long ASH Clinical Research Training Institute (CRTI) fellowship,” Mr Gajida stated.

He explained that recipients of the award must conduct research that will increase hematology capacity in their countries.

“The recipient of the ASH Global Award will conduct valuable research that will help increase hematology capacity in their home countries” he added.

According to Mr Gajida, ASH award supports career growth of the future leaders in the field.
