Dichotomy Between University, Polytechnic Graduates Will Remain Until… FG Speaks

Federal government says the existing dichotomy between the graduates of university and Polytechnic will remain until the ongoing review of the scheme of service is completed.

Folasade Yemi-Esan, head of the civil service of the federation, broke the news on Wednesday shortly after the weekly federal executive council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.

The HND/BSc dichotomy has been an issue of heated controversy in recent times, with many calling for its abolition.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Yemi-Esan said the government remains committed to scrapping the lingering discrepancy between the two qualifications.

The head of civil service of the federation, however, said such will only be possible when the scheme of service has undergone its final review.

Yemi-Esan said the issue was not captured in the public service rules (PSR) as believed in some quarters, adding that the scheme of service was initiated to address such issue.

“On the discrepancies between HND and degree programme. It’s in the Scheme of Service that this will be reflected not in the PSR,” she said.

“It’s the Scheme of Service that describes entry points and things like that. And currently, we’re reviewing the scheme of service, it’s just that we did this first, and then we’ll do the scheme of service. So that’s where that will be reflected.”
