How Mathematical Optimisation Can Be Used To Solve Insecurity Problem in Nigeria, Varsity Don

Prof. Olabode Bamigbola of the Department of Mathematics, University of Ilorin, has postulated that Nigeria can use Mathematical optimisation and scientific approach to solve problem of insecurity.

Mr Bamigbola stated this on Friday at the 207th Inaugural Lecture of the university, entitled: “Making the Best use of what you have: The Mathematical Approach”.

The don, who teaches in the Faculty of Physical Sciences of the university, observed that the problems militating against the realisation of optimising our national life are insecurity.

He listed them as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and herders problem, unemployment, economic challenges and unstable electricity supply, among others.

According to him, all these problems can be solved using mathematical and scientific approach in their resolution.

“Techniques of Mathematical optimisation can be employed to enhance the economic fortunes of a nation. It is amazing to find how USA, Russia, China, India and South Africa grow their national development with the application of Mathematics.

“By controlling key parameters of our economy, fluctuations in prices can be kept abreast.

“Two important strategies utilised in Mathematical Optimisation are ensuring system’s improvement and the elimination of wastages. Policies and practices that are inimical to progress and growth should be avoided,” he said.

Similarly, the expert in Mathematics observed that one of the signs of underdevelopment in the country is incessant outages in electricity supply.

He explained that disruption in electricity supply not only interrupts processes, service delivery, but is the harbinger of the many dangers that bedevil such a community.

“The Nigerian government should rally support to enable regular supply of electricity,” he advised.

Bamigbola also recommended regular revision of Mathematics curricular at all levels of education for the purpose of adapting to the rapidly expanding frontiers of Mathematical knowledge in concept, content, methodology and adaptation.
