In commemoration of the 16 days activism against Gender based violence, the women & girls rights defenders, Young men’s network and All survivors initiative in partnership with Feed The Vulnerable Families Foundation of Nigeria has on the 15th day sensitized over 200 students of Royal Step Academy kuchigoro Abuja on the effects of gender based violence and the importance of consent .
The event which took place at the premises of Royal Step Academy had in attendance the President of Young men’s network Aliyu Abdulrahman Bello, Women and girls rights defenders President Amrah Aliyu, Aisha Yunusa of Feed the vulnerable Families, the proprietress of Royal Step Academy Ms, Mercy Ebuka, all organizations members and all teachers of the School.
While addressing the students, Amrah Aliyu shed light on the 16 days of Activsm against gender based violence, why it is celebrated, how to take part and the need for all the students to take a pledge against all forms of violence against women and girls.
In his remark, Aliyu Abdulrahman Bello spoke about female genital mutilation, how it is carried out and the negative consequences of the barbaric act, he further charged the students to deviate from all sorts of violence against women and girls and not to be silent when they’ve witnessed an act of violence within them.
The female students of the school were also given free sanitary pads and sensitized on menstrual hygiene by Aisha Yunusa the lead of FTVF.
Making the closing remarks Saleh Faruq Gagarawa who represented the Executive director of All survivors initiative handed over copies of Violence against persons prohibition act, detailed acts of violence against women and girls, etc to the school management.
“I was once like you who graduated from this school and I have no doubt that you’ll start advocating against all sorts of violence against women from what you have learned here, from what was disclosed here today I myself have learned new things that i didn’t know of before, so you see we are all learning and nobody is too old to learn, this is why I am charging you all with the responsibility of putting a stop to all sorts of violence against women and girls in your communities” Gagarawa said while making a closing remarks on behalf of all the organizations. He further charged the school in adding sex education to the guidance and counseling scheme of work.
The All Survivors initiative donated the sum of seven thousand naira only to appreciate the students who answered questions against Gender based violence correctly and encouraged other students to be making an effort in participating in such kind of activities.
The Proprietress Mrs Mercy Ebuka who received the items on behalf of the School, appreciated the kind gesture of all the organizations who partnered to educate the students on the ruinous effects of GBV, she also charged the students to be good ambassadors of the school and frown against all sorts of violence against women and girls.
