The leadership of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Students’ Union has petitioned Commandant of the Western Nigeria Security Network, better known as Amotekun, Amitolu Shitu over the harassment cum assault on three students of the Varsity.
The union in a release made available to Vreporters on Wednesday night by its public relations officer and its President, Ogunperi Taofeek and Olayiwola Folahan Festus respectively, said the victims were reported to be rough-handled and extorted to the tune of N100,000 on 29th of April, 2022.
The horrendous incident, according to the release happened around Mayfair area of the ancient city of Ile-Ife.
The release read in part; “In a bid to ensure that justice is done as regards the assault meted on some Great Ife students by some cadets of Amotekun, the leadership of the Union today met with the Director General of State Security Service, represented by the Assistant Director General, Osun State and alongside leadership of NAUS stormed the Osun State Police Command to meet with Commissioner of Police. At the meetings with the CP of Police and the ADG of SSS, the leadership of the Union, led by Comrade Olayiwola Folahan Festus “Reform” petitioned Amotekun for assault on Great Ife students”.
To ensure justice for the victims of the harassment, the union made three sterling demands from Amotekun, and vowed to embark on aggressive media campaigns should the security outfit fail to meet the demands within 72hrs. The demands as categorically stated in the release are;
“1. That those who committed this heinous act must be provided by Amotekun outfit for proper punishment;
” 2. That the money stolen from one of the victims must be returned;
“3. That the medical bills of the victims must be paid”.
The union also reiterated its frantic effort to step up the security of Great Ife Students within and off-campus.
Recall that the leadership of the Union had on Monday, 2 May 2022, visited the Amotekun office in Ife to demand justice for the victims.
