Strike: Payment of Arrears of Consequential Adjustment Not Part of Our Core Demands, ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, university of Lagos, UNILAG, chapter has said the payment of arrears of the consequential adjustment of the minimum wage being paid by the federal government into the account of members of ASUU is not part of the union’s core demands.

The chapter chairman, Dele Ashiru stated this in a release made available to newsmen on Friday.

Ashiru said, the need to separate tissues from issues became imperative following calls by some concerned member of the public to clear the air on the recent payment which was believed in some quarters as one of the government’s move to end the ongoing strike.

The statement read: “Our members are reminded that this is not one of the core demands upon which the ongoing strike action is premised.” For the avoidance of doubt, the demands of our union are; the conclusion of the renegotiation of 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement; Abrogation and fraudulent and corrupt IPPIS scheme; the deployment of UTAS; Payments of promotion arrears ; Earned Academic Allowances; Proliferation of state universities, and government issues amongst others”.

Ashiru who described the disbursement by the government as “unsolicited payment” however welcomed government’s effort and also urged the members to conserve the funds and spend it wisely in other to energize their struggles until their demands are satisfactorily met.

He lauded the resolve and sacrifice of members in enthroning a university system that is globally competitive.
