A corps member simply identified as Bright has passed away at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Ede, Osun state.
Details of his death remain sketchy as of the time of this report.
Funmi Okundaye, the state NYSC spokesperson, told PUNCH on Monday that the corps member died in his sleep.
“What you read is that a corps member passed on in his sleep? That was exactly what happened; there is no other thing to add. Nothing to add or remove from it,” she was quoted as saying.
Eddy Megwa, the scheme’s director of public relations, could not be reached for comment on the matter.
He did not respond to calls and a text message seeking more information about the incident.
The 2023 batch ‘B’ stream 1 orientation course commenced on July 12 across the country and is scheduled to end on August 1.
The three-week exercise is compulsory for every Nigerian graduate undergoing the scheme. It was introduced to help corps members understand the objectives of the NYSC.
During the programme, prospective corps members (PCMs) participate in several trainings such as paramilitary drills, physical exercise as well as lectures on topical national issues.
The PCMS also receive practical social and leadership skills to enable them tackle challenges during and after the service year.
