The Lagos State Parks and Garages Administrators, on Tuesday, said it had put modalities in place to comply with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive for the implementation of 25 per cent reduction in transport fares in a bid to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal on residents of the state.

The PUNCH reported that Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, announced a 50 per cent reduction in the fare of all state-owned transport systems.

The governor also said modalities had been put in place by the informal transportation sector, especially the yellow buses, to slash their charges by 25 per cent.

Speaking in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Tuesday, Samuel Olalere, the acting Director, Media and Strategy to the Chairman, LASPAGA, Oba Suleimon Raji (Ashade I), said the 25 per cent reduction of fares by yellow buses would take effect from today (Wednesday).

“The 25 per cent reduction in all yellow buses (fares), as announced by Mr Governor, takes effect immediately tomorrow (Wednesday).

“The state chairman (LASPAGA) called a meeting of all zonal leaderships and all state executives in charge of all the chapels across all the six local governments where we have our leadership distributed and decided (at the meeting) that the 25 per cent reduction is to take effect from tomorrow,” Olalere said.

He added that the leadership of LASPAGA had been instructed to also effect a reduction in the cost of tickets issued to bus operators in various parks by 25 per cent for an effective implementation of the governor’s directive.

“As a matter of fact, he (Raji) has instructed that the ticket that was being sold for N800 should now go for N600. That is a N200 deduction on all of the tickets. And the 25 per cent reduction in bus fares for commuters is to take effect immediately as well,” he said.

Asked about how LASPAGA planned to enforce the 25 per cent reduction, Olalere said, “The office of the Deputy Operations is to work with the task force team (of LASPAGA) to move across all our parks by tomorrow and ensure that the instruction is implemented across the board. That is what the chairman has done today.”
