OAU Management Finally Reacts To ‘Arrest’ of Students by EFCC

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State through its Public Relations Officer, Dr. Abiodun Olanrewaju in a telephone conversation with Association of Campus Journalist, ACJ-OAU’s Correspondent, disclosed the need for the University’s management to know the outcome of the incident before any official statement is issued to the public. He further made known the physical presence of himself and the institution’s Chief Security Officer at Ibadan EFCC zonal office to secure the release of the Students.

According to him, ‘I‘m still in Ibadan, just coming to Ife from the EFCC office. I went there together with the CSO to represent the University. We are not complacent. We want to know the end before we issue any release’.

Speaking further, he said, ‘we are not the type of management that will sit down in Ife and be monitoring events from Ibadan. So, we are physically there to secure the release of over 90% of the Students’.

Recall, that students and Alumni in their scores have taken to social media pages condemning the incident terming it as ‘unlawful, unjustified arrest and abduction’, demanding for the students’ immediate release from the EFCC custody while students led by the union leaders also made their way to the EFCC Ibadan zonal office protesting the act.

Meanwhile, at the time of filing this report, 58 students have regained their freedom from the EFCC custody.

Also, in what seems to be a win, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission has place a bans on sting operations at night. According to the tweet posted on the official X handle of the agency, Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has directed that sting operations at night time be stopped in all the Commands of the EFCC.
