OAU to Complete its Independent Power Plant by October – Alumni President

OAU: The President of Great Ife Alumni, Engr Wale Olaleye who led other national executives to the citadel of learning has revealed the plan of the management of the institution to complete the institution’s independent Power plant that would be fueled with gas . Mr Olaleye let this out at the maiden edition of a stakeholders meeting between the Alumni body and the generality of Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU) Students on Saturday at the largest lecture theatre of the institution, Amphi theat

Mr Olaleye revealed the reasons behind the meeting which is not unconnected with the agitations of some students of the institution to increase the welfare conditions, including the accommodation policy introduced in 2018 by the management.

According to Olaleye, “for some time, we have been hearing a lot of things about our school. I want you all to know that, your school is not the worst, I hope some of you go to other universities to see what is obtained there, it’s as terrible as what we can’t imagine. So, how do we uphold what we have, if you say your school is bad, that is the way people will look at you outside. For us that are outside, we are very proud of this school, but when we hear any negative things about the school, we are not always happy, that is why we think the Alumi body needs to engage the generality of students to know what’s bothering your mind. This is because, there is no regular interface between you and the University”.

Olaleye Added that, the University is also planning a lot of things, “I must tell you that, because of the humongous amount being paid for electricity, the University is working on his own Power plant, we are looking at October ending for the completion of the project, when it is completed, the institution will not be at the mercy of power distribution company (Disco). Part of the plan for this project is to train our students studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the power plant, the project is sited at the back of banking area of the university. The University is also working on the expansion of the Dam, and there will be phase two of the Dam when the phase one is completed, so when that is done the problem of water will be solved. As I speak, we have identified eight lectures theatres that need attention, the lectures theatres are; The two Auditoriums in the Faculty of Arts, The three BOO lectures theatres in the Faculty of sciences and the three Health sciences lectures theatres (HSLTs) in the Faculty of health sciences. I want to tell you on good authority that works would start in two of them next week”. Olaleye said.

The Students were also given opportunity to point out issues affecting them as part of the critical stakeholders of the institution, the issues raised by the students boarder on victimization of students by the management which includes blockage of electronic portal(ePortal), security of students staying on and off campus, delay in processing of results, unconditional reinstatement of students’ Union among others.

He however promised that, all the points raised in the course of the meeting by the students would be tabled before the authority of the university and would be addressed appropriately.
