Super Eagles newcomer admits his love for Okocha during childhood

Belgium born-Nigerian forward, Cyriel Dessers has admitted his love for the former Nigerian International, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha as regard to his dexterities in the field of play, during his days as a kid.

In a dialogue with BBC Sport Africa, the Heracles Amelmo forward disclosed that, while his teammates, in the football academy, admired the former Brazilian playmaker, Ronaldinho, he always admires the former Paris Saint German ace.

His words: “When I was 12 years old, during technical trainings at my academy, every player had to choose one skill or more . Some kids did the scissors kick of Ronaldinho but mine was always the Okocha moves.

“I loved him when I was a kid.” He added.

However, the joint top scorer of the Dutch league expressed his discontentment of not making his debut in the green and white colours, his motherland, Nigeria, describing that, it would have been one of the ‘best moment’ of his life.

Recall that, the 25 year old forward was named in a 24 – man squad last March, that will be playing against Sierra Leone in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers, but the match was suspended indefinitely due to the pandemic.

“It hurt me because I thought it was going to be one of the best moments of my life – or at least my career – and that it didn’t go through was really painful,” he told BBC Sport Africa.

Meanwhile, during his course of studying Law, in the University of Belgium, the former FC Utrecht striker, brought his good moments of how the country saw gold in 2013 AFCON hosted in South Africa. He also admired the young squad that settled for the bronze in the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, hoping that he will quickly adapt by the time he plays for Super Eagles of Nigeria.

“It was really special because at that moment I was in college studying. I wasn’t even a professional football player, I remember being so happy – with Mikel the captain, Emenike with the goals. It was a special moment for sure.

“I know it’s a young team, a lot of players playing in Europe, so I think that the adaptation would be fine and I hope when I come into the team they accept me.

“I am looking forward to seeing Victor Osimhen, I like to watch a lot of football and watch the strikers and I think he is a great striker, and I hope I can help him and support him.”

Recall that Cyriel Dessers is currently a joint top scorer of the Dutch League, Eredivise, with 15 goals tied with Ajax’s Steven Berghuis. Also be informed that he is the second African to be a top scorer of the Dutch league, behind the Ivorian and ex-Vitesse striker, Wilfred Bony who currently plies his trade in North African club Al-ittihad, Egypt.
